- 2019-01-11 at HPK - TPS, U20 by Antti Wennström
The 16-year old U17 international for Finland made his Jr. A debut for TPS against HPK, playing 18:26 with three shots on goal. Viro got some powerplay time as well.
TPS lost 0-2, but it was surprising how mature Viro’s first game on the new level was. You couldn’t really tell he hasn’t played on this level, as he did so many things so well.
His skating was there – good mobility and nice top speed. When moving on the defensive zone, on defensive situations, he didn’t run out of his position. There were a few times when he picked up the puck from a tight spot and rushed with it to create play. His first passes were good and accurate. He also showed a bit of aggressiveness in front of the net and in the crease, with a bit of crosschecking without getting penalties. He also released a few quick wrist shots on the powerplay.
Viro seems like a promising two-way defenseman with smart hockey IQ and offensive awareness, and based on this game his skills are ready for Jr. A level already. The rest, based on this showing and his point totals, will be dependable on the progress of his shot and overall strength.
