Despite not getting into the score sheet against Slovakia, he continued to be one of the most consistent Finnish defenders of the tournament. He has been the captain of the team and he has been really good all-round.

Välimäki is not the flashiest player but he shows potential to become really good two-way defenceman. He doesn’t make big hits but his positioning, physical presence and ability to check the puck from the opponent makes him really solid at the own end. Despite not having the quickest feet, his skating is not really a weakness either and his acceleration and agility are good for a player of his size. He is rarely late in any situation thanks to his high hockey IQ.

Offensively he isn’t the most creative player but he knows when to join the rush and help the offense and when to stay behind. His passing skills are also very good and he usually gives sharp and precise passes. Välimäki has dangerous shot which is hard, accurate and which usually finds it’s way to the net.

Despite the loss of Finland, Välimäki played an outstanding game. Especially his ability to use his big frame was impressive. He was able to knock opponents off the puck using his big body and he won nearly all the physical battles. Two-way defenseman positioned well, had a good gap control and managed to get puck from the Czechs using his active stick.

Offensively Välimäki relied mostly on simple yet effective passing play. Couple of times he joined the rush at the right time and created scoring chances for the Finns. He also carried the puck when there was an opportunity to do so.

His excellent defensive play, good skating and passing skills as well as his above average intelligence makes Välimäki really interesting prospect and he should be able to continue playing big minutes in World Juniors.
