Nurmi has developed into a serviceable energy line winger in the Liiga level. Nurmi protects the puck well and is very strong in board battles. He also lays out a big hit every once in a while.

While he still isn’t the quickest skater in any means, he has gotten better in skating. He is constantly active forechecking and positions himself well in the defensive zone.

Nurmi has all the tools to become a third our fourth line energy winger and PK specialist with some secondary scoring upside with his capability of crashing the net and putting in rebounds.

Nurmi played the opening game in the fourth line with Joona Koppanen and Juha Jääskä and had a good game despite the lack of ice time. The 19-year-old Finn, who was the 163rd pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, had a defensive role and didn’t get the puck very often.

While on the puck, the lanky forward protected the puck well and kept the plays simple in the offensive zone. Nurmi’s skating was generally decent but he lacked the game pace a bit. In total, he logged 10 minutes and 59 seconds of ice time, one shot on goal and two penalty minutes.

The Ottawa Senators prospect had a strong game on the second line for Finland U20. Nurmi utilized his size to his advantage and played a strong physical game. He was constantly aware of what’s surrounding him and made strong plays on the penalty kill. He read and anticipated the play well. His first few strides looked quicker than in the past. Although I don’t see Nurmi developing into a top point producer in the future, I like his versatility, competitiveness and defensive reliability.
