Niklas Nordgren
Drafted by Chicago Blackhawks in 2018 #74
- 2018-04-29 at U18 World Championships by Miika Arponen
Nordgren won the goal-scoring title of the tournament with eight goals in seven games. He scored the goals in multiple ways displaying great skills in finishing ability but also in creating the scoring chances himself.
The diminutive forward’s size and skating have been concerns, but they didn’t hold him back in Chelyabinsk. His skating skills looked above-average, even though his top speed is still a bit of a concern. At this level his size was not an issue, as he had enough strength and agility to match against his peers. It is a bit of a concern although when it comes to the pro ranks.
In addition to his impressive offensive showings, Nordgren impressed also with his defensive game. He played solid two-way game and was used even on short-handed.
While Nordgren’s tournament was definitely impressive, his draft stock is still a bit of a question mark because of the size and skating concerns.

Nordgren had pretty good match against Russia despite not getting to the scoresheet as he created couple of scoring chances for his teammates. He also had couple of one timers in power play but his shots weren’t that lethal this time.
The forward is small and his skating has been holding him back. His skating was enough for this level though and I think he has improved his agility and first steps during the season. Nordgren has always been skilled player able to make fancy moves with the puck and his puck handling skills are impressive. Nordgren’s passes were often inaccurate this time, but he usually had a good idea behind the passes.
Nordgren is a player with really high work ethic. He battles and checks constantly and he comes to help defense immediately when needes. He positions well at the own end and made couple of crucial blocks. His assets should make him reliable option in every situation.

Niklas Nordgren played his first game after injury. You could see the lack of games especially in the first period when he seemed to be bit late from the situations. Also his skating didn’t impress as his seemed to be slower than most of the other players.
However offensively Nordgren showed that he has a lot to offer. His skill level is still impressive, he can keep the puck in tight spaces and he knows how to deke efficiently. Also his work ethic was excellent, he helped defense when necessary and he was willing to go into tight spaces and board battles. Nordgren gave couple of good passes too.
- 2017-03-04 at HIFK - K-Vantaa, U20 by Marco Bombino
Nordgren has been very effective lately, scoring 11 points in his last six games. That includes one goal against Kiekko-Vantaa where he showcased his quick hands in close. A very smart player, Nordgren has really good puck handling skills as he controls the puck well in tight spaces. Moreover, his speed and skating have improved and he works hard away from the puck, getting quickly back defensively. He’s not afraid to compete in front of the net and has good hand-eye coordination. He also made some decent passes. He wasn’t able to use his high end shot a whole lot today, however.
