Sampo Ranta
Drafted by Colorado Avalanche in 2018 #78
- 2018-02-24 at Muskegon Lumberjacks - Sioux City Musketeers, USHL by Asko Huuki
Ranta saw a lot of responsibility in a away game against Muskegon Lumberjacks playing in a top line as well as in power play. He didn’t get a point in this game and he registered only one shot but one of his shots hit the crossbar in this game.
Ranta has a great poise, he protects the puck well and he was responsible in bringing puck to the offensive zone in the power play. He gives sharp and precise passes but he isn’t the craftiest playmaker. His shot is also somewhat average. His defensive game has some holes at this point too.
The forward is really strong player for this level and he constantly won his battles. His skating looked above average and his puck handling skills are above average. He hasn’t been able to produce as many points as his abilities would allow him to, but he could become pretty dangerous power forward when he gets it all together.
- 2018-02-13 at Finland - Czech Republic, U18 Five nations by Miika Arponen
Ranta had a strong game playing on the second line. He was constantly active both with and without the puck and had his wheels turning all the time.
The winger was very strong near the boards and won almost all of his battles during the game. His back-checking was very effective and he forced a couple of turnovers with his hustling as well.
Offensively Ranta’s game was decent. He played simple almost power-forward-like game but showed also some abilities of a playmaker. His shot seemed to be pretty much average.
- 2017-08-09 at Finland - Russia, Hlinka Memorial by Asko Huuki
Ranta was not the flashiest Finnish forward on ice in a game against Russia but he showed surprisingly complete game for a player of his age. He showed good all-round ability and he looked like a player who can be relied to in every situation.
Ranta might not have any big strengths in his game but he is above average skater with good hands and work ethic. He has improved his defensive game greatly and while he is not the kind of player who would make big hits, he does not shy away from the physical game either. His game is pretty straightforward which should fit well into small rink.
The forward showed good hands and stickhandling ability couple of times and he was able to pull off dekes and carried the puck with poise. After one of these situations forward gave a solid pass to blue line which eventually ended up to a goal scored by defenceman Mikko Kokkonen.
